State Income Tax Rates

These are typical rates which apply to most taxpayers who file as single or as married filing jointly. The rates shown are rounded to the nearest 1/10 percent. The lowest rate usually applies to the lowest income range, and rises with increasing income. In general, the highest applies to all income at and above the highest income bracket.

However, there are very substantial differences in how states apply these rates, how the rates vary with income, how exemptions and other deductions are calculated, and so on. There may be surcharges. Consequently, we recommend that you only use this table as a very rough comparison of your potential tax liability in various states.
